Juniors should begin taking the ACT and plan to take it several times between now and the fall of their senior year. Applications are in the counseling office, or students can apply online at www.actstudent.org. Community service has become an important deciding factor for many scholarships. If your son or daughter has not been involved in any type of community service, please make sure he or she begins giving back to the community in some way. Make sure to document service hours, regardless of how menial they may seem. Scholarship providers want to see that students are developing compassion for others and are able to translate that compassion into action. Please let me know if I can be of service to you or your son or daughter. 256-233-5591 tracie.speer@lcsk12.org Debbie Poland, 9th Grade Counselor debbie.poland@lcsk12.org Celeste Schrimsher, Middle School Counselor celeste.schrimsher@lcsk12.org University of ALABAMA, EARLY COLLEGE

8th Annual Hunstville Youth Leadership Conference The 8th Annual Huntsville Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) will be held 27-30 October 2010 at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, This YLC is one of 26 multi-day MOWW conferences nationwide to promote patriotism, good citizenship, service to country, leadership, and free enterprise and is an opportunity for high school students to interact with experienced professionals in Government and industry. This program is on the National Association of Secondary School Principals' National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for this school year (verifiable at http://www.principals.org/ after 8/30) and has been on the list for all previous years of the Huntsville YLC. We are expecting up to 80 first-time students to attend. Sixty from North Alabama are funded through corporate and private donations for students and are at no cost to the school or students. Based on relative student population of the schools invited, your school has an allocation of one (1) slot until September 20th. Slots remaining unfilled after that date become slots at large and will be filled on a first received basis of completed applications until October 15th, the deadline for all 1st-time student YLC applications Selection is by the school and validated by MOWW. Selected students should meet the following student criteria: Be a sophomore or junior (enables judging the benefit at your school and community at least one year) Has not previously participated in a multi-day MOWW YLC Has a GPA of 2.8 or higher and is active in school/community activities Be selected and/or recommended by your staff Be available and committed to being at the entire conference -- 10/27/09 check-in by 4:45 PM to 10/30, 1:00 PM Be capable of light exercise Not require special accommodations/assistance that is not fully provided by the guardian at the guardian's expense including any accommodations/assistance for lodging in Space Camp's Habitat As our organization name implies, we are a veterans organization and support JROTC. However, being in JROTC is not a requirement for attending the YLC. All of us have a stake in the sustainment of our nation. Also previous YLC students serve as the YLC's Implementing Staff. We have a full staff at this time, but eligible students can submit a student staff application for alternate consideration. Those selected will participate with the rest of the student staff in preparing for implementing the YLC to ensure having a full and prepared staff for the YLC. There is no cost to school or students for students serving as staff and the positions are not considered as part of school allocation for first-time students. Selection is by MOWW subsequent to receipt of completed student application from the recommending school official. Due date for staff applications is August 25th. Additional YLC information, including downloadable student application forms and mailing instructions, is available at our website. The schedule on the website is representative for 2009 and will be updated soon for YLC 2009. The application forms are at: http://www.huntsville-moww.org/modules.php?name=YLC2009&file=applications. Other YLC web pages are accessible from the application page. As an alternative, you can call or e-mail one of the following: Mr. Brion Chabot (Col, USA retired) at (256) or bchabot@knology.net Mr. Dave Dunlap (LtCol, USAF retired) at (256) 651-1983, dunlapdl@aol.com As follow-up to this letter, we will be e-mailing its content to your guidance counselors and JROTC instructors.
