Summer Reading List

The Limestone County School System created grade-specific reading lists for all students entering Grades 7-12 to supplement and enhance the language arts curriculum. English teachers chose the novels based on literary merit, interest level, and readability. The variety in selections is intended to prepare students for college and careers and to encourage students to read more.

Students enrolled in advanced/honors English courses during the 2017-2018 school year must choose one novel from the list of choices for the grade level they will be entering in August. The novel should be read by the first day of school with the student prepared to take an exam on the selection. The exam format will include both multiple choice questions (70 points) and extended response questions (30 points). The total points earned, a possible 100 points, will count as one test score to be averaged as any other test score during the first nine weeks grading period. While students are required to read only one novel, they are encouraged to read additional selections based on their interests.

8th Grade Reading List:

  • The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen

  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

  • Soldier Boys by Dean Hughes

  • Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry

  • Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper

  • Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream by Tanya Lee Stone
